Description

Purpose of the job:

To safely operate the Production processes in order to achieve production and quality objectives

 

Balanced Scorecard Pillars, Roles and Responsibilities:

ESH & QUALITY

ESH Management:

  • Apply health, safety and environmental objectives within the internal environment
  • Comply to Legislation as set out in the OSH Act and to organisational standards
  • Address workplace hazards and risks
  • Within scope of authority of the role, carry out all the employers lawful orders in the interest of health and safety, and  report any unsafe acts or conditions

Quality & Food Safety:

  • Comply to Legislation as set out in the Foodstuffs Disinfectants and Cosmetics Act and all other relevant Food legislation, regulations and organisational standards
  • Apply and continuously improve procedures within internal environment
  • Comply with requirements of the Integrated Management System

FINANCE:

  • Protect company assets (working capital & fixed assets)

PROCESS:

Processing:

  • Monitor and control the refining process from the control room
  • Minimise losses (leaks, spillages, double handling, reprocessing, material waste, etc.)
  • Assist with fault finding in the Refinery
  • Participate with the actions required for  Emergency Action Plan and Food defence Plan
  • As part of the learning process, train and work for the employer according to allocated shift patterns in the following areas, but not limited to:

Receiving:

  • Receive oils/fats from road/rail tankers and from interdepartmental transfers
  • Take oil samples and conduct Quick Analyses and/or label and forward to Laboratory for analysis
  • Receive & store Hydrogen gas, Nitrogen gas and Caustic

Tank Park:

  • Receive oils from suppliers
  • Conduct tank park stock takes
  • Drain by-product tanks and monitor stock levels

Neutralizing:

  • Transfer oils/fats to and from the tank parks and neutralising plant
  • Operate the Neutralizing process

Bleaching:

  • Transfer oils/fats to and from the tank parks and bleaching plant
  • Operate the Bleaching process
  • Filter bleached oils/fats into the buffer tanks/Intermediate Tank Farm (ITF)

Hydrogenation:

  • Transfer oils/fats from the ITF and the Refined Oil Storage (ROS) tanks to the hardening vessels
  • Operate the Hydrogenation process
  • Filter the hydrogenated oil into the H tanks and recover spent catalyst (plate and frame filters)
  • Take oil samples, label and forward to Laboratory for analysis

Interesterification:

  • Transfer oils/fats from the ITF/H/ROS tanks to the Intersterification vessel
  • Operate the Interesterification process
  • Filter interesterified bleached oils/fats into the buffer tanks/Intermediate Tank Farm (ITF)
  • Take oil samples, label and forward to Laboratory for analysis

Winterizing:

  • Transfer oils into the winterizing vessels
  • Operate the Winterizing process
  • Filter the winterized oil into storage tanks (W tanks)

Deodorizing:

  • Transfer oils into the deodorising vessels
  • Operate the Deodorizing process (Lurgi unit and Rosedowns unit)
  • Transfer deodorised oil to the ROS tanks
  • Operate the post-deodorizer blending process
  • Prepare and add minor ingredients as required

Transfers/Dispatches:

  • Transfer oils to the internal customer and the storage tanks/tanker loading bay
  • Load oils/by-products into road tankers
  • Dispatch by products to 3rd parties

Refined Oil Storage tanks

  • Store and monitor refined oil stocks (ROS) (Quality, temperature, age, etc.)
  • Take ROS samples, label and forward to Laboratory for analysis

Chemicals make-up

  • Debag and transfer dry chemicals
  • Make up chemical solutions

General

  • Operate the Refining process with the RS Batch & SCADA Screens
  • Assist with Production stock takes (weekly, monthly)
  • Monitor Refining conditions and equipment in the plant and make adjustments as required (Pressure, temperature, etc.)
  • Monitor run-off on rework tanks and check the spent earth bins
  • Change leaves for Winterising and TSB's

Material Handling:

  • Safely handle loads by means of a pallet jack or a hoist

First Line Maintenance:

  • Identify problem areas, diagnose the problem and report to the Process Technician, Production Supervisor or Artisans
  • Clean plate and frame filters and horizontal filters
  • Clean In Process (CIP) vertical filters
  • Change GAF bags as required

Data Capturing:

  • Update Production and Processing log sheets under Process technician’s guidance

Lean 6 Sigma:

  • Participate in planned 6-Sigma activities in line with Company objectives
  • Raise One Point Lessons and Kaizens as per target

Reporting:

  • Complete shift hand-over report as guided by the Process Technician
  • Record receipts and dispatches into log book
