Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head of Outdoor Education to find and employ Mentors for the Wilderness School Program.
  • Assist the Head of Outdoor Education to create a pool of quality Mentors who can adequately do the task as entrusted to them.
  • Ensure that all documentation required by the HR department is accurate, up to date and filed correctly against each person.
  • Accurately plan the Mentor training for the purpose of hosting a meaningful camp with the confidence that the mentors are fully briefed on not only the Wilderness School Program, but also the expectations of St John’s College as a whole.
  • Ensuring that all Mentors of the school groups are present and active during programmes and that they are fulfilling all their responsibilities within the agreed upon deadlines.
  • When not at Wilderness School the individual will be expected to be based at St John’s College and fulfill responsibilities and duties at School.
    • a minimum of a Matric Certificate
    • Level 1 First Aid
    • a high regard for the Christian faith, which underpins the values and learning framework of the Wilderness School program and St John’s College
    • strong leadership skills, accountability, initiative, autonomy and emotional intelligence
    • current and broad knowledge and understanding of Outdoor and Environmental Education for teenagers
    • an appropriate level of knowledge of local fauna and flora and environmental matters
    • the ability to create, lead and develop teams and to work as part of an existing team
    • administrative management skills
    • a willingness to be resident on the chosen property for large portions of the year, bearing in mind the site may move
    • Ability to be self-motivated, work well under pressure and handle several projects at once
    • An ability to work independently, flexibly and co-operatively
    • A willingness to go the extra mile Reports to the Head of Outdoor Education.
