The South African Sugar Millers Association NPC (SASMA) represents the interests of all sugar millers and refiners in South Africa. The Association’s key objectives cover industry partnership administrative matters, legislative measures affecting the industry and support for training and scientific and technological research.

SASMA requires the services of a strong Company Secretary to provide administrative and statutory support to the CEO and Association members. The incumbent will be required to manage all regulatory, compliance and company administrative functions on behalf of the Association. He/she will attend board meetings and prepare all the necessary correspondence, documentation and minutes for these meetings, providing guidance in terms of appropriate governance practices. The incumbent will also be required to undertake secretarial functions for an associated body, related committees and drive association objectives and requirements. As part of a small team, over and above company secretarial functions, the incumbent must be able to contribute in other areas of the association’s responsibilities and as a member of the management team.

Ideally, it is expected that the successful candidate will have a sound understanding of the Sugar Industry, as well as the legislation which governs it. While this role is highly administrative it also requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to offer appropriate consultative advice and guidance in terms of Industry specific legislation, corporate governance and statutory requirements.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

A relevant graduate /post-graduate degree at NQF Level 7/8, in Commerce/ Agricultural Economics /, or a CIS or ICSA qualification.

Experience:

Company secretarial, statutory, governance and administrative experience are essential;

At least 5-7 years’ experience in a similar position / operating at a similar level;

Sound knowledge of the sugar industry essential;

Sound knowledge of corporate governance;

Understanding of the companies act and exposure to working with an association’s Memorandum of Incorporation;

Experience in managing board and committee meetings as well as general meetings in line with governance practices with reference to amongst others, notice giving of meetings, administration of actual meetings, pack presentation and dissemination, maintaining attendance registers, minute taking and feedback processes;

Experience in drafting and preparing CEO reports, presentations, correspondence, memoranda, regulatory reports and documentation;

Experience in member relationship management and service issue management;

Competencies/skills:

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and leadership skills while working in a busy small team;

Proven member relationship development and strong networking skills;
