Description
The Department of Chemical Sciences is proud to be one of the largest departments at University of Johannesburg and in South Africa. In terms of teaching, the Department offers all the four core disciplines of chemistry, i.e. Analytical, Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Our research focusses on a number of aspects including water treatment and purification, natural products, catalysis, computational chemistry, sensors, devices, nanomaterials, materials science, energy (solar, fuel cells, and supercapacitors), etc. The Department is also a host to SARCHi chair in nanotechnology and water.
Apart from presenting lectures in Analytical Chemistry to undergraduate and honours students, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students and be involved in the other activities of the Department.
The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) involves recruiting a new cohort of academics. The programme is transformative in nature and priority is given to designated candidates. Candidates must be 40 years and younger. The programme[URL Disabled] enables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the incumbent to register for their PhD or post-doctoral studies.
Responsibilities:
In line with the Department of Higher Education and training's New Generation Academic Programme (nGAP)[URL Disabled], the Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make an appointment of a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Sciences. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and ambitious aspirant academic to contribute to and expand the Faculty's current teaching and research interests/specialisations.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the department, including administrative duties, and teach in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Analytical Chemistry in the Department of Chemical Sciences.
In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:
- Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate students
- Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students
- Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams
- Attend departmental and faculty meetings
- Establish their own research niche in Chemistry and participate in research activities leading to publication of articles
- Participate in Community Engagement initiatives in the Department and Faculty
