Overall Job Purpose

Reporting to the Financial Manager: Group Finance. The technical accountant will be focussed on implementation of new IFRS’, specifically IFRS 17 ‘Insurance Contracts’. This role will have 4 key pillars: a) Design of accounting policies & procedures, b) Implementation of the design, c) Monthly & annual processing in line with the design and d) Assisting with ad hoc requests.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities

IFRS 17 Implementation (implementation of the design)

  •  Take responsibility for IFRS17 accounting & reporting design including: chart of accounts, data sources, management accounts, Annual Financial Statements, journal entries, “bridge” between IFRS4 and IFRS17
  • Implementation of first time design including transition and testing
  • Serve as the subject matter expert regarding IFRS17
  • Build a robust process that supports the IFRS 17 Finance team
  • Own the IFRS17 process, including data breakdown, analytics, and validation
  • Develop a reporting framework and dashboards that provide insights regarding IFRS17 to senior management

 

Stakeholder management

  •  Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including actuarial and insurance systems staff
  • Monthly procedures execution in line with the design including sourcing of data, processing of journals, disclosures on management accounts & Annual Financial Statements
  • Participate in IFRS17 steerco meetings
  • Collaboration with external auditors

 

Design solutions for implementation of new International Financial Reporting Standards

  •  Responsible for drafting the audit committee position papers for approval of new IFRS
  • Gap analysis for PPS Group
  • Design and implementation of solutions to mitigate gaps
  • Design of accounting policies & procedures
  • Monthly & annual processing in line with the design

 

Solutions for technically, complex matters

  •  Act as the go-to person for technically complex matters in the financial control environment
  • Identify opportunities for system enhancements
  • Create efficient processes and manage multiple workflows with various stakeholders
  • Preparation and delivery of technical updates and communication (verbal and /or written) of industry developments to relevant stakeholders, as required.

 

Project Management

  •  Perform other financial reporting tasks and projects as identified
  • Assisting with ad hoc requests

Desired Experience & Qualification

Education:

  • Newly qualified CA(SA)
  • Proven track record of top academic results

 

Experience:

  • Newly qualified with a very keen interest in technical accounting matters
  • Experience in a reporting environment while doing articles
  • Experience within an IFRS technical accounting environment - non-negotiable
  • Insurance industry experience advantageous
