The Department of Visual Art is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture on the Bunting Road Campus of the University of Johannesburg. The Department has a long and proud history of producing artists and academics who have recognised national / international profiles and who have contributed greatly to the diverse visual industries of South Africa.  We are looking for an experienced senior academic to join our team of educators in the Visual Art Department as a Professor in Art History and Theory, based on the following requirements:

Responsibilities:  

 

  • Oversee the teaching, research and assessment requirements of the Art History and Theory programmes for the entire Department.
  • Teach and assess Art History and theory at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in African art/postcolonial studies/gender studies.
  • Supervise/co-supervise Honours-level, Masters-level and PhD-level students' dissertations - compatible with own research areas.
  • Actively contribute to the Department's research and artistic/curatorial profile through publications and external research collaboration and representation.
  • Contribute to Departmental, Faculty and Institutional administration responsibilities, including the possibility of taking over as the Head of the Department
  • Obtain funding from external bodies
  • Build and develop international networks and partnerships
Profile
  • A doctoral qualification in Art History or related discipline
  • Deep and broad-based knowledge of the discipline
  • Knowledge of African art/postcolonial studies/gender studies.
  • Must have 15 years discipline-specific teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate tertiary levels
  • Experience in university programme and curriculum development
  • Evidence of completed postgraduate supervision
  • Proven research excellence with significant accredited research output
  • A well-developed teaching portfolio that provides evidence of scholarship of teaching, learning and research
  • Involvement in the national or international academic community and/or industry
  • NRF rating or intention to obtain NRF rating within the next three years
