Apart from presenting lectures in Medical Laboratory Sciences to undergraduate students, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and be involved in the other activities of the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) involves recruiting a new cohort of academics. The programme is transformative in nature and priority is given to designated candidates. Candidates must be 40 years and younger.  The programme[URL Disabled]  enables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the incumbent to register for their PhD or post-doctoral studies.

Responsibilities:  

In line with the Department of Higher Education and training's New Generation Academic Programme (nGAP)[URL Disabled], the Faculty of Health Science at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make an appointment of a lecturer in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and ambitious aspirant academic to contribute to and expand the Faculty's current teaching and research interests/specialisations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the department, including administrative duties, and teach in the undergraduate program in the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:

  • Prepare, deliver lectures and assess undergraduate students in Medical Laboratory Science at Bachelors level
  • Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students
  • Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams
  • Student mentorship, consultations, performance monitoring and interventions
  • Undertake academic development and quality assurance of modules
  • Be responsible for administrative tasks related to teaching and learning in the programme and related modules
  • Attend departmental and faculty meetings
  • Undertake the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and producing research outputs
  • Establish their own research niche in Biomedical Science and participate in research activities leading to publication of articles
  • Actively participate in the research activities of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Biomedical Sciences department programmes
  • Participation in the departmental academic activities
  • Building links with industry, other training providers and relevant stakeholders
  • Participate in Community Engagement initiatives in the Department and Faculty
  • Do anything reasonably requested by the HOD and the Dean

[URL Disabled] Additionally, nGAP lecturers are required to participate on the South African's Universities' Development Programme (SSAU-DP)

Profile
  • Masters' Degree in Biomedical Technology/ Biomedical Sciences (70% and above); and preferable a PhD qualification or commitment to register soon after commencement of duties for a PhD
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (Medical Technology Board) in Cytology/ Haematology
  • 2-4 years teaching and or related laboratory experience

Recommendations:

  • Demonstrated ability/experience to work with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's licence and recent regular driving experience
