Description

The Department of Visual Art is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture on the Bunting Road Campus of the University of Johannesburg. The Department has a long and proud history of producing artists and academics who have recognised national / international profiles and who have contributed greatly to the diverse visual industries of South Africa.  We are looking for an energetic and vibrant academic to join our team of educators in the Visual Art Department as a Lecturer in History of Art, based on the following requirements:

 

Responsibilities:  

 

  • Teach theoretical units across all years in the undergraduate Art History and Theory modules in the Department.
  • Coordinate the first year programme, including some pastoral care.
  • Provide support with Postgraduate Research Proposal writing workshops and support of incoming MAVA students
  • Assist with Honours academic theory support and supervision when required.
  • Supervise/co-supervise Masters-level students in dissertation writing - compatible with own research areas.
  • Actively contribute to the Department's research/artistic/curatorial profile through publications and external representation.
  • Contribute to Departmental administration responsibilities
  • Participate in the Masters Seminars / Critique programmes.
  • Present conference papers
  • Write research articles for publication
  • Positively contribute to the Department's national / international standing and reputation
Profile
  • A Masters degree in Art History
  • A minimum of four years lecturing / teaching experience at university level
  • Knowledge of African Art History and contemporary African art
  • Knowledge of Postcolonial/decolonial theories in art history
  • Broad disciplinary knowledge of history and theory/philosophy of art
  • Evidence of research and publications.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
  • Excellent teaching skills and good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Enthusiasm and passion for the Visual Arts
  • Experience in research and conference presentations
  • Willingness to contribute to Community Engagement and to pursue international links where possible.

Recommendations:

  • A track record of post-graduate research supervision and publication in the relevant field
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. teaching evaluation or relevant portfolio.
  • Innovative teaching techniques incorporating technology.
  • Ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
