Large manufacturer in the FMCG/Personal Care sector based in Durban is looking for a Cosmetic Chemist to join their team immediately
Duties & Responsibilities
- Work closely with the commercial team and new external clients to develop a wide range of new products. Follow projects from prototype development through to manufacturing.
- Manage multiple projects at any given time from inception to launch making sure each milestone is met on time.
- Development of formulas through stability, micro and compatibility testing.
- Manage all claim substantiation testing.
- Establishing manufacturing procedures and resolve product or process problems.
- Establish finished product specifications.
- Proof labels and claims to ensure compliance with labelling legislations.
- Manage formula qualification, lab scale up, and production scale up.
- Work with production and oversee pilot batches and issue adjustments as and when needed.
- Optimize current formulations to improve product quality and reduce cost.
- Sourcing more cost effective and better quality raw materials.
- Responsible for trouble shooting product issues (stability, ingredient substitution, processing issues, ability to use or rework product that is outside of specification).
- Ensuring complete compliance of all raw materials and final products with current legislative constraints.
- Investigate customer complaints together with the marketing, quality and production team, and take required action to resolve issues.
- Involved in the export of products: Ensure compliance with international regulations; Liaise with international manufacturing company to ensure effective manufacturing and quality of final products.
- Maintain a working knowledge of cosmetic regulations for cosmetics/active ingredient regulations.
- Evaluation and improvement of analytical procedures, SOP's and specifications.
- Participate in routine quality control analysis and assist with bulk batch adjustment. Work effectively within the laboratory team to ensure product compliance.
- Maintain excellent record keeping and generate documents (Batch Sheets, COAs, MSDSs, NCRs) as required. Request and catalogue MSDSs for new raw materials.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment. Ensure good housekeeping.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- National Diploma or BSc in related field (Chemistry preferred) or Diploma in Cosmetic Chemistry with experience.
- 5 years’ experience in cosmetic formulation
- Micro experience is a bonus
- Personal Care specific product experience is critical
Package & Remuneration
R15 000.00 to R30 000.00 CTC negotiable
